The Birkman Method

One of the most sophisticated and robust personality assessments for understanding what drives behavior, leadership, and team dynamics.

Much more than describing personality

Created by Dr. Roger W. Birkman in 1951, The Birkman Method® helps uncover the relationship between a person’s observable behavior, psychological needs, and how they may react when those needs are not being met.

This distinction goes beyond describing what a person is like. It helps explore the conditions they need to perform effectively, how they relate to others, and what may happen to their behavior under pressure.

Birkman also incorporates interests related to the activities and areas that naturally generate motivation and energy, providing a comprehensive perspective that is particularly valuable for developing leaders and teams.

Conceptual Elements

Usual Behavior

How a person tends to behave and interact with others under normal conditions.

Needs

The conditions a person expects and needs from their environment and from others in order to function effectively.

Stress Behavior

Changes in behavior that may emerge when certain needs remain unmet.

Interests

The areas and activities that naturally generate motivation, energy, and engagement.

Experience with The Birkman Method

NEARLY TWO DECADES WORKING WITH BIRKMAN

Since 2009, I have used The Birkman Method® in hundreds of individual assessments and interpretation sessions, as well as dozens of team interventions across Mexico, Latin America, and the United States.

Over the years, I have worked with national and multinational organizations across a wide range of industries, including food and beverage, consumer goods, technology and e-commerce, telecommunications and infrastructure, financial services and insurance, logistics and supply chain, higher education, the steel industry, fitness, and entertainment, among others.

After nearly two decades of working with Birkman, it has become naturally integrated into my professional practice as an organizational psychologist, coach, and consultant, and has become one of the frameworks I use to understand the complexity of human behavior within organizations.

Birkman Applied to Organizations

FROM SELF-AWARENESS TO ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

At Hipnos Y Hermes, we do not use Birkman as a stand-alone diagnostic tool. We integrate it into development processes with clearly defined objectives, turning assessment insights into conversations, decisions, and actions.

EXECUTIVE COACHING

Deepen self-awareness and understand how needs, behaviors, and potential responses under pressure influence the way a person leads.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Identify individual patterns that influence communication, relationships, decision-making, and leadership performance.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTIVENESS

Understand the differences among team members, their needs, and how those differences influence collaboration and collective performance.

COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Identify differences in styles and needs that may underlie recurring tensions or communication challenges.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Generate relevant insights for development conversations, mobility, career planning, and professional growth.

The depth of an intervention depends not only on the assessment being used, but also on the experience with which it is interpreted and the quality of the process in which it is integrated.
